Science and the Paranormal

I’m presuming that most of the followers to my blog are of a scientific mindset and so I’m not entirely sure how many of you do or don’t believe in the paranormal. I myself must admit to being somewhat skeptical, but I’ve teamed up with some people to form a paranormal investigations group (actually I seem to have been roped into doing most of the work for it including setting up blogs and designing logos). I suppose you could say that main reason for being involved is I’m curious to find out what exactly is making people believe in the existence of ghost and the like.

Will we find anything? I don’t know, but I suppose one way to look at it is I spend hours and hours looking for signs extraterrestrial intelligence over at SETILive, yet we’ve never found definitive proof that intelligent life exists outside of our own planet. Nobody has really proven that ghosts do or don’t exist, most of us just assume that it’s made up by crackpots, the fevered imaginings of deranged minds or overactive imaginations. I don’t think science has ever really studied it, and science mostly requires evidence to prove that a theory is correct. On the other hand, Carl Sagan once said that “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”.

My involvement in this is purely out of curiosity, and I’ll let you all know what I think once a few interviews and investigations have been completed. I’ll admit I may end up only being a temporary member, and the other people seem happy with that. I’ll keep an open mind, though. I may just stay on to manage the blogs and things as it’s all being posted through my own accounts.
